What
is Art Trek?
Below
is an excerpt from the Art Trek
Organization's website,
to better explain the program.
Art
Trek is a community outreach program that trains parents and other
volunteer docents to go into the classroom to deliver sequential,
hands-on art lessons. Our lessons are designed not only to impart
rendering, painting, and sculpting skills, but also to build
student confidence and community ties.
The
lessons follow the elements of art: line, shape, color, form,
space, and texture. Materials for the lessons include pastels,
acrylic and tempera paints, watercolors, clay, chalks, and
colored pencils. Some biographical information and art prints of
related great past art masters and recognized contemporary
artists are incorporated into each lesson. The majority of the
hour lesson is devoted to student work.
The
classes are taught by volunteer docents who attend art workshops
at which they:
1.) Complete related projects that they will teach.
2.) Receive training on effective teaching methods.
3.) Spend time discussing and troubleshooting questions that
might arise while teaching
Art
Trek is a cost effective and wonderful way to bring the visual
arts into the classroom and to strengthen the volunteer core of
a school.
Most
importantly, Art Trek's mission is to create a positive and
confidence-building experience for the students while they
problem-solve and take some artistic risk to produce their work.
Goals:
To
impart a basic working knowledge of art techniques, media,
vocabulary, and history.
To
increase awareness of the influence art has on our culture:
personal, interpersonal, sociological.
To
involve students creatively, supported by effective lessons and
manageable techniques in a positive and encouraging environment.
To
gather and build a strong team of parent docents. To train the
docents in the art of teaching children to:
1.) sequentially build up and enhance their drawing and painting
skills,
2.) heighten their visual senses,
3.) appreciate their own creativity and that of others, both the
Great Masters and their peers,
4.) become familiar and comfortable with many art materials.
These
goals also apply to the docents.
How?
Art
trek
facilitator, Gerri Wendel meets volunteer docents at SMMS each
month. Together we discuss teaching philosophies, methods and
strategies for different grade levels, and do the art projects.
Before
the parents become docents they become students.
Scheduling:
The
Docent Coordinator meets with teachers to set a bi-weekly schedule.
One hour allows for warm-up, lesson, project, cool-down (share).
Dark weeks are a good time to make up any lessons.
Training:
All
volunteers will have clear plans, tasks, and identified roles.
Docent workshops meet at school in the School Hall approximately
every three-four weeks to cover the next set of lessons. It is here
that the program takes its breath...in the enthusiasm of the
docents. We create, discuss, trouble-shoot, and role-play.

What
to Expect
Once
Docents are established for each class the program begins.
Each
class pretty-much runs itself – meaning the friendship between
docents & helpers is awesome – you know each others contact
numbers (if one or some are running late or can’t make it), you
meet before school to review lessons, you take turns collecting
supplies, you meet new parents and family members, and you have a
wonderful time in the classroom.
Docents
will then attend the monthly trainings/workshops. (Docent is the
fancy word for a volunteer who could attend the workshop :o)
Docents
& Helpers meet at the school at least 15-20 minutes prior to
the scheduled class time and go over the lesson and supply list.
The supplies are collected from the main supply area. Then
you go into your class & have fun.
Docents
will “teach” or “lead” the class in the lesson.
Usually starting out with a quick vocabulary, presentation of the
project they will produce and talk about the mediums they will
use.
Helpers
are in the classroom to help with the lessons. Usually,
while the docents are talking with the children, the helpers put
supplies at all the children’s places & set up the lesson.
In Kindergarten they usually sit on the floor – then are
dismissed by table when all supplies are in place. A really
good strategy here (I found in Kindergarten) is to remind the
children to have “snowball” hands – meaning all hands should
be clasped and not touching the supplies until the docent directs
them to.
As
the docent leads the lesson, the helpers roam the room and make
sure everything runs smoothly. It’s as easy as making sure
everyone has a pencil or paper or their paint palette is full.
The younger the children, the more helpers are necessary, as they
like to ask a lot (A LOT) of questions and touch or play with
everything without listening to the instructions.
Helpers
and docents are there to offer encouragement; the teachers remain
in the room to handle discipline, and together docents, helpers
and the teacher will keep the kids on track. Usually, you
will find that the teachers let the docent & helpers run the
room, so unless you ask for help or send a child to the teacher if
they are acting up – you will have the floor and run the lesson
as if it’s your own class.
Then
at the end of the lesson, helpers and docents collect the supplies
and lessons (or put them in the back of the room to dry) and hand
the finished lesson to the teacher to put in their Art Trek
Folders.
All
children are given an Art Trek Folder – this folder is used to
collect all the lessons throughout the year – then at Open
House, we go through the folders with the children, and let them
select one piece of art for the “Art Exhibition”. At the
end of the year – all folders go home with the children.
The
remainder of the supplies are returned to the supply room.
And, you’re done.
It’s
that easy.
Please
note: The school hall can be used for paint projects
if cleared with the School Office first. Setup on paint
projects usually require 30-45 minute lead-time. Also
note, that there may already be a class set up (or setting up)
in the school hall on conflicting days. You may want to utilize
resources (docents and helpers) by running two classes at the same
time. If this does transpire, we ask that you please be aware of
the noise volume. Classes in the hall tend to be louder and
nearby classrooms may be affected (Science and 2nd Grade).

Reminders
& Tips
Above
you will find
all classes broken down by grade, current schedule, and parent
volunteers.
CLASS CONTACTS / COORDINATORS:
Each class will have an acting contact or coordinator. The
coordinators are responsible for their own class. You will
be provided with a finalized list of docents for your class with
class dates, docent names, phone numbers and email addresses.
A LOT of volunteer help and hours are involved with Art Trek --
the more people we have signed up within classes, the more
flexibility we all will have (example: coordinator can
alternate monthly workshops, docents can alternate weeks helping,
alternates can be scheduled to alternate months on call).
Please keep in mind other parents will want to work in
their child/childrens class(s) as well. Though they cannot
attend the workshops or be a docent themselves, many want to
aid/help in the classrooms as "worker bees". We
suggest a note home with a list of class Art Trek dates to help
generate participation - remind them it may be as simple as
handing out paper, helping with scissors, etc...they will not need
an Art Degree.
Should you foresee scheduling conflicts, please notify other
Parent Volunteer/Docents within your class assignment to alternate
classes. If you cannot find an alternate for your class,
please contact
the Art Trek Coordinator
to help provide one.
Also, should the teachers need to re-arrange their schedules, we
ask that you provide a new class schedule to the Art
Trek Coordinator, so that we will be able to make copies and all will have
the most current information.
TEACHERS:
Should you foresee further scheduling conflicts, please notify
your Coordinator
as soon as possible. Some months it may be necessary to have
ONE Lesson (Example: October Testing). Please let your Class
Coordinator know in advance - so that they can choose the proper
project to present.
You will be provided with Art Trek Folders labeled for every
student in your class. Please place completed projects in
the folders and do NOT send the Art Trek projects home. We
will be going through the folder with the students when it comes
time for our Open House. The more
projects in the folder - the better the selection for the
students.
PARENTS:
Should you foresee scheduling conflicts, please notify other
Parent Volunteers within your class assignment to alternate
classes. Should you have a conflict with the dates assigned,
please notif y
the Art Trek Coordinator.CLASS
RATIOS:
Kindergarten - 4-5 Docents/Helpers Class (Ideal 1 docent/helper
per table - 5 tables)
1st - 2nd Grades - 3 Docents/Helpers Class
3rd - 8th Grades - 2 Docents/Helpers Class
ACCESS TO ART SUPPLIES:
When you are scheduled to meet, we ask that you arrive at least 20
minutes prior to the start time and collect your art supplies. Art
supplies are kept in the cabinets on the left side of the school
hall (back of the room). Ours is the 2nd
cabinet from
the right on the end.
We ask that you only take what supplies are necessary for your
class. Some days there will be 3 Art Trek classes going at the
same time on the same day, please be courteous to take only what you need.
Also, should you find the supplies getting low, please contact the
Art
Trek Coordinator
at your
earliest convenience.
BABYSITTING & LITTLE HELPERS:
The
more the merrier! If you cannot find a babysitter for you
little one, and you feel they can sit with the class - bring them
along. We usually have enough supplies to let them do the
project in the back of the class - or at least play with the
different mediums. Of course, supervision will be by the
parent, and the parent will be busy with the rest of the class --
so if you really don't think he/she will sit well, we ask that you
do find a sitter.
Thanks
for all your help & support.
If you would
like to participate,
please contact the
Art Trek Coordinators with
any questions.
We'd love to have you join in the fun!
