Mr. Garcia Awarded Educator of the Month

St. Mary Magdalen School is proud and honored to have Edward Garcia chosen as one of the Educators-of–the-Month for the school year 2014-2015. The Education Committee of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Educator-of-the-Month program providing special recognition to a maximum of six local teachers who have demonstrated excellence in carrying out their duties by continuing to extend themselves beyond their generally accepted standard of performance.

Mr. Garcia, our junior high advanced literature and English teacher and eighth grade homeroom teacher, has been at St. Mary Magdalen School since 2006. He re-established the National Junior Honor Society, was the boy’s basketball coach for 2013-2014, presently is co-coordinator of the student council and coordinates graduation activities every year in the spring.

Edward has a sincere love for literature and desires success for all his students. One of his previous students commented, “Beyond opening my eyes to both the importance and need for literature in society, Mr. Garcia showed me what it means to be an influential teacher. He took an interest in both the things I wrote and the things I read, while also paying attention to the ways those things affected me as an individual. Now an English major at UCSB, I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today without Mr. Garcia. He once told me that his joy towards teaching comes from the idea of shaping and nurturing the talents that students already had within them. Like a gardener in a garden, he waters and tends to seeds that already have the potential to grow and flourish; they just need some care.”

Mr. Garcia is instrumental in preparing his students for high school by offering creative lessons intertwined with advanced technology. Most importantly, he prepares these young men and women to go out in the world with high values, stand up for what they believe and to always dream big.

Edward and his wife, Michelle, live in Agoura Hills with their two daughters, Olivia and Harper.

Once again, congratulations to Edward Garcia, Educator-of-the-Month!
